A large tractor-trailer ambled down the six-lane interstate at 65 to 70 miles per hour. Carrying a load of flammable liquids, the truck driver hoped to reach his destination within the next 4 hours. As he cruised through the metro area, he saw a Ford Explorer ricochet off a Lexus SUV. He tried to avoid the spinning Explorer by braking and then moving his wheel swiftly to the left. Instead of missing him they collided but the evasive maneuver forced the truck to jackknife. The impact by the Explorer caused a puncture in the truck’s load so in addition to a mangled Explorer; three other cars that got caught in the accident, a light blue toxic liquid flowed on to the expressway.
Once the police got to the site, they stopped traffic entirely in the direction that the traffic had been moving, called EMS to transport the twelve injured motorists and contacted an accident scene clean up company. The accident scene clean up company that also performs murder scene cleanings, crime scene cleanings, homicide scene cleanings, blood scene cleanings, meth lab cleanings, odor removal cleanings and death scene cleanings had particularly strong expertise to handle this catastrophe. With knowledge about the nature of the leaking liquid, they launched a plan to conduct a large mop up operation of the chemical. In addition, they faced the horrible task of cleaning the remains of the deceased driver of the Explorer as well as tissue and blood of some other injured motorists. They also coordinated with the tow truck officials who were also called to the scene to dispose of automobile and truck wreckage. Finally, they applied a solvent to absorb the residual chemicals and then dispersed some sand along the affected lanes to ensure no unusual skidding would result once the highway was reopened.
The large job undertaken by the accident scene cleaners was as sobering as it was multifaceted. But the comprehensive expertise of the trauma scene clean up staff enabled it to execute the cleaning. In this city of millions traffic was resumed in just a few hours. While nothing can compensate for the loss of life and other injuries, the silver lining in this situation was that the death scene cleanup of the flammable liquid was completed before any combustible incident occurred. The tragedy was disturbing but it was prevented from being much worse.
